Rafting / Tubing

Near Bukit Lawang we have many opportunities for Rafting and Tubing. One of our most rewarding and relaxed Tubing experiences is the trip from Bukit Lawang to the village of Bohorok. Although there are some minor rapids, it is suitable for everyone. The trip offers beautiful views on the forests and rice fields. The return trip is by ‘Angkot’.

Bat Cave

A scenic half-hour walk from Bukit Lawang is the Bat cave, inhabited by small Sumatran bats. The cave contains areas with stalagmites and stalactites.
During our walk we will see rubber plantations and Durian trees, the most famous fruit of Indonesia. Maybe you want to try it? We also might see some interesting wildlife like monkeys, or even an orangutan.

Traditional Village tour

As a great way to experience the local culture, you can travel through green rice fields, rubber plantations and through local villages around Bukit Lawang. You will learn more about the process of palm sugar refinement and rice production, and other local customs.
We will have lunch at a local restaurant where you can try various Indonesian dishes.
We travel by Becak (tuk tuk), Motorbike or Bicycle.

Elephant Bathing tour

The tiny village of Tangkahan is famous for its Sumatran elephants. Here you can experience an amazing adventure together with elephants.
The Tangkahan elephant day trip starts from Bukit Lawang at 10 a.m. The trip takes us through rural villages, plantations and forests.
Upon arrival in Tangkahan we have lunch at a riverside guesthouse. After lunch you can explore the beautiful surroundings of Tangkahan, and swim in the rivers.
At 3:30 p.m. we will go to the elephant area to see the semi-wild Elephants. Here, they enjoy their daily bath in the river. You can participate in the washing and feeding of the elephants.
After the elephant bathing, we will drive back to Bukit Lawang, arriving there around 6 p.m.
The journey can be done by car (air-conditioned) or motorbike.​

Wild Elephant trek

Another way to experience the Sumatran elephants is by our unique Wild Elephant trek in the jungle of Sumber Waras. Here, a small population of wild elephants roam the area. We get the chance to trek and see these amazing animals in their natural habitat.
This Wild Elephant trip starts from Bukit Lawang at 7 a.m. We will travel 4 hours, on unsurfaced roads. Upon arrival in the area we start the trek with an additional local guide. We have a good chance of spotting wild elephants. The trek takes 5 hours.
After the trek, we will drive back to Bukit Lawang, arriving there around 9 p.m.
The journey can be done by car (air-conditioned) or by motorbike.
