About Us

Guides of Bukit Lawang Discovery

We are a team of enthusiastic local guides. Our mission is to share our passion for trekking with others. We all speak English and we are licensed via the Indonesian Tourist Guide Association.

If you’d like to trek with one of our guides, just get in touch. We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Help the local community

If you book with us, a part of the revenue is donated to support the local families in our village. We provide basic food help. That is our contribution to our local community. In this way all people benefit from tourism, and might prevent them to choose for illegal activities such as logging or poaching.

Sustainable trekking in Sumatra

Sustainable Trekking
Trekking is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable activities to participate in, as we feel at one with nature. Yet no matter where you hike, it should be a pastime that is performed with the respect in terms of the natural world around you. It is about protecting that natural beauty and ensuring it is there, unspoiled, for generations more of hikers to enjoy.

Here are a few simple ways how we can respect the environment around us when we are out on a trek:

Take all you need, and take it home with you. Plastic waste can be hazardous to the natural environment and is particularly harmful to wildlife. So never leave it in the jungle.

Think carefully about fires. We must be truly vigilant here, as even a fire that looks like it is out may have dying embers that are still a huge fire hazard.

Respect wildlife. Getting up close and personal with wildlife is one of the joys of a nature trek, but always be respectful and give the animal in question plenty of space. Do not touch any animals that you come across, as there can be lasting consequences to these actions that we can’t even consider.

Gunung Leuser National Park

Covering an immense area in the northern part of Sumatra, Gunung Leuser National Park is home to Sumatran orangutans, Thomas-leaf monkeys endemic to the Leuser rainforests, bands of macaques, hornbills, sun bears, unique butterflies and the last remaining populations of Sumatran elephants, tigers and rhinos. This rainforest is a treasure of biodiversity, and covered by a dense tree canopy, but under threat from oil palm plantations, illegal logging, population pressure and wildlife poaching.

Guests can only visit the area under guidance of a certified guide of the Indonesian Tourist Guide Association (ITGA).

Bukit Lawang
Bukit Lawang is the perfect entry point for the National Park, situated at Bohorok river, directly at the entrance of the park. It is approximately 80 km from the city of Medan, with public transport, tourist mini buses and private charters readily available. Its charming riverside location, cheap guesthouses, Indonesian food, and laid back atmosphere make it the ideal place to enjoy the amazing outdoors of Sumatra.
